Kings of War’s design ethos is one of simplicity, allowing tactics and strategy to rule over powerful units and game breaking magic. Published by Mantic Games, who are mostly made up of ex- Games Workshop employees, Kings of War was already gaining a lot of interest due to its streamlined rules and relaxed approach to the use of miniatures. They are also written for adults and have far higher standards in terms of writing, they aren't stories but they are filled with information, quotes and literature on the lore and don't feel like trying to read an encyclopedia as many RPG setting books can do.The most obvious first choice to meet your regimental fantasy needs is Kings Of War. It was these books that gave me my deep passion for the lore despite having been playing tabletop for years before reading them. If you are interested in the Lore the Warhammer 2nd Edition RPG books produced originally by BL are the by far the best books I've read on the Warhammer world.

They are light hearted and comic by design and if they come across like a b movie then that's exactly what they were supposed to be however. I'm not sure your thinking about them the right way, I treat them like pulp fiction and read them inbetween proper novels. The main character was basically Sherlock Holmes (whether we are talking about Schwarzhelm or Archaon) and the reader is Watson trying to follow along the main character's strategy. The short stories left something to be desired, being more about a particular story plot and lacked character development. I thought both novels were good, although not at the level of Knights of Bretonnia.īoth the Emperor's armies and Lord of Chaos had a short story after the main novel. The Emperor's armies had probably more twists and turns. That being said, both the emperor's armies and the Lord of chaos had various twists and turns in the plot. I actually have the opposite opinion of the Emperor's armies and Lord of Chaos, I found that the Lord of Chaos was a more interesting read and the emperor's armies was more of a slog. I agree that Knights of Bretonnia is very good, one of the best Warhammer book series.

The former is really interesting, the later was a bit of a slog that I wouldn't recommend.

I've read both the Emperor's Armies and Lord of Chaos books that came out with the first Warhammer total war. Knights of Bretonnia, an Omnibus of the entire tale of Calard, a noble of Bretonnia, is a really good read, and I'm not only saying that as a Bretonnia fan, it's a genuine good read. The Horus Heresy stuff is genuinely worth reading.Įdit: as for the horus heresy books, yeah the first 12 or 13 are good, but then its all about %$^ing alpharious for like 4 books to the point it made me sick of reading about that tool and i switched to chronicles. They are genuinely well written - popcorn literature, but good popcorn, not unlike the marvel films. Otherwise I would move, as I've moved, to 40k books. It is mostly stuff I would have been embarrassed to read as a 10 year old. I think Warhammer lore was left to fester and that ultimately that was what killed the franchise. If you are determined to slog through then I would say the William King Gotrex books are fun and worth it (stop after him), the Thanquol novels are genuinely good. The Vimpire Wars trilogy, which I know some people loved, was more like a B movie cult special than warhammer The Nagash Trilogy I only got through because I love Nagash, but my goodness is it badĮverything written about Elves is awful - especially gav thorpe The TW Empire trilogy was so turgid I couldn't face the Chaos books. I started reading Warhammer novels just before the game came out - I was going through a difficult divorce and to anyone in a stressful situation I would recommend reading trash you were in to as a kid as a way of coping/escapism.īut my conclusion is that *generally* they are awful.
